Protecting Elephants and People with Science

NEWS

Human-Elephant conflict in the forms of crop raids and destruction of infrastructure continue to cause losses for farmers and deaths for elephants. Leveraging nature's own way of setting boundaries through the power if scent might be the key to protect both elephants and people.

In Northern Botswana, elephants can regularly raid crops and destroy insfrastructure, but through our local partner Wild Entrust Africa, your support is aiding the development of a groundbreaking approach which offers new hope.

Wild Entrust's already game-changing initiative, the Botswana Predator Conservation Bioboundary Project, has now launched an innovative new trial using scent-based repellents to safely deter elephants.

The new progress builds upon traditional repellents with limited success, now harnessing commercially available commercial oils which are affordable and easy to apply, with effective results.

The study tested nine oils in high-traffic elephant areas. Over 2,300 elephant encounters were recorded, with 94 documented repellent reactions.

This approach is low-cost, scalable, and farmer-friendly. These qualities matter because they are essential for real-world adoption. With elephants classified as endangered and lethal control being all too common, scent-based solutions may be the key to coexistence.
