What is Pelorus Foundation?
Our mission is to champion innovation and act as a catalyst, empowering individuals and local communities to preserve and protect the world’s wildlife and wild places for future generations.
Mangroves are a small, coastal tree species that are particularly efficient at absorbing carbon and storing it in their extensive root systems underground. In addition to their excellent carbon sequestration abilities, mangroves provide excellent flood and storm protection to the coastal area itself.
Through our planting partners, ACES, we’re supporting the development of two mangrove forests, Mikoko Pamoja and the Vanga Blue Forest. Both are pioneering blue carbon projects, restoring critically important mangrove forests under a community-based management approach. Both projects have a strong community benefit, whether it’s providing 108 schoolgirls with sanitary products to ensure that they can continue to attend school whilst menstruating, or funding schools, water provision, hospital equipment through the sale of carbon credits. 30% of project income is invested in the community, and spending is governed by a locally elected committee with the whole community invited to vote.
Both projects are certified under the Plan Vivo Standard, offering the assurance that the project is not only scientifically robust, but ethically and socially just.
