Supporting Female Rangers

In Southeastern Kenya, a river meets the ocean through a mosaic of floodplains, mangroves, and swaying grasslands that are home to elephants, hippos, and flocks of vibrant birds among other wildlife.

This rich ecosystem has, unfortunately, also become a hunting ground for illegal traffickers. The Tana Delta is, however, more than a biodiversity hotspot, its also a lifeline for both wildlife and local communities, such as work for local rangers who understand the needs of both people and nature.

That is why Pelorus Foundation has partnered with Ulinzi Africa Foundation, who are leading the fight to transform the Tana Delta from a poaching hotspot into a safe living ecosphere for people and wildlife.

Trainning Rangers. Protecting Wildlife. Preventing Conflict.

Ulinzi Africa Foundation is Kenya’s first ranger-focused conservation organisation, dedicated to protecting wildlife by empowering the people on the frontlines. Founder Raabia Hawa employs a team of 12 rangers who, for 10 years, have been making a difference through arrests, recoveries of weapons, and much more.

Together, they train and support rangers, provide essential gear, and improve ranger welfare while working hand-in-hand with local communities to reduce human-wildlife conflict. Through grassroots action and relentless commitment, Ulinzi bridges the gap between conservation and community, ensuring both people and wildlife can thrive.

On the field, Raabia Hawa's leadership brings unpararelled teamwork, allowing rangers to act as a Rapid Response Unit to swiftly assist wildlife and communities alike, whether transporting an injured animal or helping a farmer in need. In cities, their Urban Willdlife Rescue team is alert to answer emergency calls for animal rescue needs.

Conservation work doesn't stop there, their Marine Programme also fuels grassroots beach clean-ups and turtle protection along Kenya's coast.

Amplifying their work, their advocacy programme brings these conservation voices where they are needed most.

Supporting Impact-Driven Initiatives is key to protecting nature.

Ulinzi Africa Foundation's bold, ranger-led approach to protecting biodiversity takes action beyond protected areas to address poaching, habitat degradation, and human-wildlife conflict directly at the source.

In June 2024, in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service, intercepted a motorcycle in Tana River County transporting illegally hunted bush meat, including dik-dik, porcupine, and even a freshly killed baboon, which led to multiple arrests and a one-year prison sentence for one offender.

This is Ulinzi’s holistic approach to conservation. Empowering rangers with rapid response capabilities, rescuing wildlife from urban and marine threats, and tackling root causes of human-wildlife conflict through advocacy and grassroots action.

Ulinzi stands boldly at the intersection of community, conservation, and courage.

"One day, you'll know the story of how a handful of brave men stood behind one lady who had one dream, and they made it come true."

Raabia Hawa, Founder and Director at Ulinzi Africa Foundation.
