KELP BLUE CARBON

Blue carbon focuses on the world’s coastal and marine ecosystems. By growing seagrasses and seaweeds, as well as restoring and conserving mangroves – carbon can be effectively sequestered and stored while enhancing marine habitats and supporting coastal communities.

Our project partners combine technology, science, and the natural processes of the oceans to clean up the planet, such as by growing kelp which sequesters CO_2. The macroalgae is then sunk to the deep ocean floor where it’s stored for at least 800 years – thought to be one of the planet’s most effective and permanent carbon removal systems.

Founded by fishermen, Running Tide started by reinventing regenerative aquaculture and ecosystem restoration in Maine, United States. Now, their unique team of scientists, biologists, fishing captains, engineers, and welders are leading the blue carbon movement – from growing macroalgae at a phenomenal rate, to improving margins to 80% from the industry average of 20%.
