What is Pelorus Foundation?
Our mission is to protect, preserve and promote at-risk wildlife and environments across the planet
The immense restorative power of nature itself is one of the most cost-effective ways to tackle climate change, yet there is also an urgent need to invest in novel technology pioneering new methods needed to reverse climate change.
Our global portfolio, investing in forestry, soil sequestration and technology driven blue carbon, means we can we invest in both nature and technology-based solutions.
Without investment, emerging industries are unable to scale – a responsibility which we all share if we are to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees.
Inextricably combined with the success of nature-based solutions is the long-term involvement of local people. This is why we’ve chosen to support several Plan Vivo Standard certified projects which place the local population at the heart of restoration projects.
“Most offsets available today are emission reduction, which are necessary but not sufficient to achieve net zero in the long run” – The Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting. Emission reduction offsets prevent the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, for example, encouraging the use of cookstoves to reduce the need for firewood or converting to renewable energy. However, carbon dioxide is not removed from the atmosphere.
NATURE-BASED APPROACHES TO CARBON REMOVAL
Carbon dioxide is sequestered from the biosphere through natural processes like reforestation, restoring degraded agricultural land or planting mangroves. The storage of carbon dioxide is short-term.
TECHNOLOGY-BASED APPROACHES TO CARBON REMOVAL
Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere using innovative technology, which often capitalises on natural process, for example, blue carbon or biochar. The storage of carbon dioxide is long-term.
Our portfolio showcases and invests in some of the world’s most high-quality carbon dioxide removal solutions. Although we think it’s important to prevent more carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere, physically removing carbon dioxide has a more direct impact when addressing travel emissions.
We support the view that project success depends on the long-term involvement of local people, on their own terms, on their own lands. That’s why we’ve chosen to support several Plan Vivo Standard certified projects which place the local population at the heart of the restoration projects. From co-creation, to arranging local NGO teams to run projects, our Plan Vivo projects give autonomy to communities on the forefront of the climate crisis.
Finally, we wanted our Climate Investment Fund to invest in the development of novel technological solutions that are pioneering new methods needed to reverse climate change. Scaling up blue carbon is predicted to be crucial in the United Nation’s goal to keep global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees. We’re always on the look out for emerging technologies we can include in our portfolio too.
